Northern Australia Indigenous Development Accord

On 29 May 2020, the Prime Minister announced that the Council of Australian Government (COAG) will cease and a new National Federation Reform Council (NFRC) will be formed, with National Cabinet at the centre of the NFRC.

The Northern Australia Indigenous Development Accord (the Accord) is an intergovernmental agreement to progress Indigenous economic development as a critical part of the Northern Development Agenda. The agreement recognises Indigenous participation in the economy is essential to fully realise the development of northern Australia, and provides a framework for governments to work together and individually to advance Indigenous economic development in northern Australia. Under the Accord, participating governments recognise economic development as a foundation for Indigenous self-determination and a pathway to long-term community wellbeing; and commit to activities that implement recommendations made by the Indigenous Reference Group and agreed by the Ministerial Forum on Northern Development.
